Datos rápidos: Around 1,200 Uros people still live on roughly 60 handwoven floating islands made entirely from totora reeds. The islands must be constantly maintained with new layers of reeds added every two weeks or they slowly rot and sink into Lake Titicaca.
Destacados: The islands literally move under your feet: you feel the spongy reed surface sway and bob with every step, like walking on a giant waterbed. Entire island communities relocate together when their reed base deteriorates, dragging their homes to fresh spots across the lake.

- Wear closed-toe water-resistant shoes: the reed ground stays damp and you will sink slightly with each step.
- Skip the crowded main islands closest to Puno and ask your guide to visit the smaller, more remote family-run islands farther out.
- Book an overnight homestay with a Uros family to experience the islands after all day-trippers leave at 3 PM.
