Datos rápidos: Al acercarte desde el río se percibe la piedra caliza salpicada por la bruma marina, y las ornamentadas ventanas manuelinas parecen encaje tallado que evoca rutas de navegantes. Miles de fotografías prueban que su perfil sigue fascinando a la gente, y subir sus estrechos pasillos ofrece vistas inesperadas del estuario y el viento que golpea la piedra.
Destacados: Mandada construir por el rey Manuel I entre 1514 y 1520, la obra del arquitecto Francisco de Arruda combina almenas militares con motivos marinos: cuerdas talladas en piedra, esferas armilares y ventanitas que parecen ojos mirando al río. Durante siglos estuvo aislada en un islote y hoy, al subir su estrecha escalera de caracol y respirar el salitre, puedes imaginar las naos de la Era de los Descubrimientos pasando a pocos metros de esas mismas piedras.
