Datos rápidos: Extendiéndose a lo largo de 12 kilómetros de escarpada costa mediterránea, este parque protegido alberga tres torres de vigilancia del siglo XVI construidas para defenderse de las incursiones piratas. Más de 300 especies de plantas prosperan aquí, entre ellas el raro palmito mediterráneo y olivos silvestres que han sobrevivido durante siglos.

Destacados: La red de senderos de 14 kilómetros sigue antiguos caminos de pastores que no han cambiado en 400 años, serpenteando entre muros de piedra caliza derruidos y calas escondidas donde a veces anidan las tortugas marinas. Uno de los senderos conduce a la Torre de la Sal, una torre de vigilancia que aún conserva cicatrices de balas de cañón de un ataque pirata berberisco de 1587.

  • Pack sturdy water shoes for the rocky coves; the smooth pebbles can be slippery and the sea urchins are real.

  • Skip the main beach areas near Peñíscola and drive 10 minutes north to the park for uncrowded swimming spots.
