Acerca de

Datos rápidos: Once the heart of a 4,000-acre cattle ranch, this open space now offers 13 miles of hiking trails across 800 acres. The historic cattle camp still stands, with original stone walls and corrals dating to the 1860s.

Destacados: Look closely at the old cattle camp and you'll spot hand-laid sandstone walls built by Chinese laborers who worked the ranch in the 1890s. The seasonal creek that carved this canyon also created a rare coastal sage scrub habitat where cactus wrens and Cooper's hawks still nest today.

Consejos de expertos

  • Bring a sun hat and plenty of water, the canyon offers almost no shade on the upper ridges.
  • The Cattle Camp Access Trail leads straight to the historic stone corrals, the most photogenic spot in the preserve.
  • Skip the East Fork Trail if you're short on time, it's the longest and least varied path.
  • Arrive before 8 AM on weekends to snag one of the 18 parking spots at the main trailhead.
