Faits rapides: Le culte s'est déroulé ici sur 30 dynasties royales, environ deux mille ans de construction excédentaire qui a survécu à l'expansion même de la construction des pyramides. La grande salle hypostyle contient 134 colonnes de grès, la plus haute s'élevant à environ 24 mètres, si épaisses que la lumière du jour s'y faufile à peine.
Points forts: La légende dit que faire sept fois le tour de la statue colossale du scarabée exauce le vœu le plus cher, et chaque jour vous verrez des visiteurs tournoyer autour d'elle avec une réelle intention. Une courte montée par la rampe en briques de terre crue du premier pylône révèle tout l'axe est-ouest en contrebas, le même alignement de 2 000 ans qui permet au soleil du solstice d'hiver d'embraser le sanctuaire intérieur.

- Carry a wide-angle lens and climb the rough ramp beside the first pylon, the elevated view captures the whole forest of columns stretching away.
- Hire a guide at the ticket office, otherwise you will walk straight past the cartouche of Hatshepsut hiding on a damaged column.
- Skip the crowded center avenue, the quieter eastern precinct holds the small open-air museum with a genuine repurposed festival altar.
