Faits rapides: Chaque année, les prêtres transportaient les statues de barques sacrées le long d'une avenue de sphinx à tête de bélier, un cortège de 2,7 kilomètres, pour célébrer ici la fête d'Opet. Un obélisque subsistant s'élève encore à 25 mètres au-dessus de la cour, son jumeau disparu se dressant désormais sur la place de la Concorde à Paris.
Points forts: Grimper sur le toit de la mosquée d'Abou Haggag révèle un dôme médiéval calé directement au sommet de colonnes antiques, si bien que l'on peut voir des maçonneries égyptiennes et des arcs islamiques empilés à des siècles d'écart. Depuis ce même toit, repérez les peintures murales d'époque romaine représentant des soldats en armure, que les fidèles ultérieurs ont peintes par-dessus les reliefs des pharaons.
