Faits rapides: Près de 40 000 blocs de pierre sculptés ont été démontés, numérotés et reconstruits 12 mètres plus haut sur une île plus sûre lors d'une mission de sauvetage de l'UNESCO dans les années 1970. Les prêtres ont continué à vénérer ici la déesse de la magie jusqu'au VIe siècle, longtemps après que Rome eut interdit les autres cultes païens, et des moines chrétiens ont ensuite recouvert les sculptures antiques de peinture.
Points forts: Chaque printemps, le culte organisait un festival de la Réunion d'une semaine, transportant l'image de la déesse vers le sud sur une barque dorée pour rejoindre son époux, une procession aquatique que l'on peut encore suivre le long des anciens canaux. Tenez-vous sur le quai de granit où la barque sacrée accostait et vous vous tenez exactement là où les pharaons débarquaient, avec l'eau de la crue qui clapote à quelques mètres de vos chaussures.
