Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Best time to visit
Visit early morning at opening when crowds are smallest and the mosaics catch cool light; late afternoon offers warmer tones and fewer tour groups.
Budget tips
Main basilica entry is free, the Museo e Tesoro and papal crypt charge modest fees so check current prices on the official site; most city passes do not include church museums so buy those tickets only if you want the extra rooms.

About
त्वरित तथ्य: Golden mosaics glimmer under the high ceilings, narrating biblical stories with astonishing detail that captivates every visitor. A rare outdoor bell tower adds a charming touch, providing a peaceful contrast to the vibrant interior filled with centuries of art and history.
मुख्य आकर्षण: Under the golden ceiling adorned with 5,000 pounds of pure gold donated by Ferdinand I of Spain in 1587, an ancient mosaic from the 5th century decorates the nave, narrating biblical scenes with incredible detail and vibrant colors. Each August, a unique tradition takes place where white petals are showered down from the ceiling to celebrate the miraculous snowfall that inspired the basilica's founding.
Insider tips
- Dress respectfully, shoulders and knees should be covered to avoid being turned away from chapels and the crypt.
- Arrive at opening to avoid large tour groups and capture better photos of the mosaics in soft light.
- Stand near the transept and the raised presbytery for close-up views of the 5th-century mosaics and the apse work.
- If short on time, skip lengthy guided tours and focus on the nave mosaics, the Borghese Chapel, and the Clementine Chapel for the richest art and history.

4.3Came around 2pm and it was packed, long security line. Entrance is free but skip the gift shop if short on time.
Attended 9am mass on a weekday, very calm and short lines. Entry is free, a small donation is appreciated and the mosaics are breathtaking.
Arrived at 8:00am with almost no line. The mosaics are incredible and the small crypt tour for 6 euros was worth it.
Visited late afternoon and the interior is gorgeous, but signs are confusing. Paid 10 euros for a guided visit that felt overpriced for 30 minutes.
