त्वरित तथ्य: Some 10,000 vermilion torii gates snake up the mountainside in a 4-kilometer loop trail. The climb passes over 200 individual shrines and takes most visitors around two to three hours round trip.

Get there for sunrise and you'll share the viewpoint with maybe a handful of early risers instead of the thousands of people who flood in by mid-morning.

Wear sturdy shoes, the stone steps get slick with moss and the climb is steeper than it looks.
The crowd thins dramatically after the first kilometer, so push past the dense section near the bottom for a quieter experience.
Small foxes (kitsune) statues mark the entrance, they're messengers of the shrine and worth a photo before the crowds gather.
Bring a flashlight in the evening, the upper sections of the trail have no lighting after dark.
