During summer, this area turns into an open stage for free concerts that draw up to 10,000 spectators sitting on the grass.

Explore Siberia without a time machine. Wooden alleys, local artisans, and the aroma of freshly baked traditional pastries await you.

Znamensky Monastery

3. Znamensky Monastery

The only monastery in Siberia that preserves pre-revolution bells that were never melted down. The scent of incense and the sound of Russian hymns will greet you as you step into its inner courtyard.

The monastery walls still preserve 900 fragments of original 19th-century murals, including a rare fresco technique combining oil paint and tempera. Its two main bells weigh 520 kg and 1,200 kg respectively, and are still rung every morning at 6:00 AM.

Behind the main altar lies a hidden underground chapel that can only be accessed through a secret door behind the iconostasis. The chapel walls are covered with thousands of mosaic pieces handcrafted by monks who survived World War II, with no two mosaic pieces being the same shape.

The emperor is depicted sitting on a large stone throne with a long robe, not on a horse like most Alexander III statues. Behind the statue, the view of the frozen Angara River in winter creates a dramatic contrast between the grandeur of granite stone and the expanse of white ice.

Irkutsk Dam

Museum of the Decembrists

6. Museum of the Decembrists

4.6 (355)

Witness how noble rebels turned exile into a cultural revolution in Siberia. Take an emotional journey through their personal belongings, military uniforms, and workspaces.

Russian nobles punished for the 1825 revolt, about 120 people, were exiled to this region. They brought with them private libraries, musical instruments, and European customs that later deeply influenced Siberian culture.

Inside are kept love letters written by the Decembrists to their wives, who willingly left their luxurious lives in St. Petersburg to follow their husbands into exile. The story of these noblewomen's sacrifice, who traveled 6,000 kilometers by horse-drawn carriage in the middle of winter, makes this museum feel like a monument to both love and resistance.

Irkutsk surprised me, not gonna lie. The wooden houses alongside Soviet blocks give it this weird, unique charm. Three days was enough for the city but add more for Lake Baikal.

Download the Yandex.Go app before you arrive. Taxis are dirt cheap but you need the app to get them, waving down cabs on the street almost never works out here.

Skip restaurants on Karl Marx Street, they overcharge tourists hard. Walk over to the area near the central market instead, same food at half the price and way better atmosphere.

I went in November and regretted it. Grey skies, icy sidewalks, bone cold. I can see why summer is peak season. The city felt pretty dead too.

Honest take? Irkutsk is fine but not magical. A day to see the main sights and you are done. Lake Baikal is the real star, do not skip that for extra city time.
