Fakta cepat: Roughly 9,000 locals live in this harbor town, but the real fame goes to the tartufo, a chocolate-and-hazelnut ice cream ball with a molten center that a local gelato maker created here in the 1950s. Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law and King of Naples, was held in the clifftop castle and shot on October 13, 1815.

Step inside and the rough stone becomes life-sized saint statues, an altar, and a pulpit all hewn from the same soft volcanic rock, each one glowing a little differently as the sea light shifts.
