The only place in Oman where legendary Arabian sailing ships are still born. Here you will see masters building ships by hand without any blueprints, ships that sailed the seas back in the Middle Ages.

Fakta cepat: Here, a tradition of wooden shipbuilding over 100 years old is preserved, recognized by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Every year, local craftsmen build one or two traditional dhow boats here, using the same tools as a century ago.

Sorotan: In one hall stands a 400-year-old ship, reconstructed down to the smallest details, found in the nearby deserts. More than 3000 hand-forged copper nails are embedded in its hull, and each plank is joined without a single modern screw.

The only fortress in Oman whose tower also served as a windmill. Climb the walls, feel the gusts of wind from the sea and see how the old walls still guard the city gates.

Fakta cepat: Shipbuilding docks, which have been part of the landscape for hundreds of years, still operate using traditional methods. Local craftsmen build dhow ships by hand without any blueprints, relying only on knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

Sorotan: Unlike many places in the world, ships here are built without any metal frame, using only wooden planks joined with ropes. The process takes from 9 months to 2 years, and each ship can carry up to 200 tons of cargo, even though it does not contain a single nail.

Fakta cepat: On the walls of this tower, traces of Dutch cannonballs from 19th-century sea battles are still visible. Three times a day, the opening and closing of the city gates of Sur, connecting the old town with the ocean, is controlled from here.

Sorotan: The tower still houses an original 18th-century mechanism that controls the massive iron gates. In the evening, when the sun sets over Sur Bay, the guards sound a trumpet signal and the gates close ceremoniously, just as they did 200 years ago.

Wadi Shab

10. Wadi Shab

4.6 (5,977)
Atraksi wisataTempat menarikTempat

One of the most beautiful valleys in Oman, where water flows through rocks straight into the sea. Hike, swim and dive into a mysterious cave with a crystal lake.

The frankincense shop near the sea fort had the best quality I found in all of Oman. Way cheaper than the Muscat souq and the owner let me sample each grade.

Sur is way more relaxed than Muscat, the vibe along the creek at sunset is unreal. Three days felt perfect to see the dhow yards and just wander.

Honestly found Sur a bit sleepy for my taste. The beach was nice but not much nightlife. Good for a quiet stopover but I wouldn't stay more than a night.

Food wise, skip the tourist cafes near the corniche. Walk into the old souq area, small bakeries there have fresh kuboos and karak for almost nothing.

If you rent a car, drive out to Ras Al Jinz for the turtle nesting at dawn. Go with a local guide from the visitor center, the group tours miss half the details.
