Late afternoon on a weekday, when tour groups have thinned out and the golden light hits the riverfront facade. Weekends draw bigger crowds, so aim for mid-week visits to enjoy the terrace in relative quiet.

クイックファクト: この中世の要塞は、スヘルデ川が狭くなる地点に位置し、「埠頭にて」を意味する「aan de werpe」から来たこの都市の名前の由来となった完璧な防御上の要衝です。下にはドリュオン・アンティゴーンという巨人のロマネスク様式の彫刻があり、川の通行料を支払わなかった者の手を切り落としたとされる伝説の人物で、この都市に手を切断する民話をもたらしました。

見どころ: 巨大な門をくぐると、世界で最も古いとされる交通標識が今も立つテラスに出ます。1550年の小さな石の銘板で、かつて船にいつ錨を下ろすかを伝えていました。最上階からは、9世紀前に商人たちが通行料を支払った場所からわずか数メートルのところを貨物船が滑るように通過するのを見ることができ、周りのすべてが変貌した一方で、川の交通は変わらず続いています。
