概要

クイックファクト: Perched on a rocky hill 40 meters above the river, this medieval stronghold once guarded the approaches to Plovdiv. Its massive walls and nine surviving towers date from the 13th century, when it served as a fortress for the Bulgarian tsars.

見どころ: Look closely at the southeastern wall, where a single stone relief of a rider on horseback is carved into the masonry, a rare surviving medieval symbol. Climb to the highest tower at sunset, when the sun floods the whole courtyard in amber light and the entire Plovdiv valley spreads out below you.
