Budapest and Hungary's main tourist areas are generally safe for visitors, though petty scams and overcharging are common around transport hubs and busy squares. The biggest risks are unlicensed airport drivers, overpriced exchange booths, and taxi fare disputes, all avoidable with official options and fixed-fare knowledge.

1. Unlicensed airport drivers
手口: Drivers approach arriving passengers inside the terminal and offer rides at inflated flat rates, often 2 to 3 times the official metered fare. They are not licensed and have no regulated prices.
回避方法: Walk past all approaches inside the terminal and use only the official taxi rank outside the arrivals hall, where licensed metered taxis wait.
2. Tourist exchange booths
手口: Exchange offices near main squares and tourist streets advertise attractive rates but apply high commission and poor buy-sell spreads, leaving you with far less than the bank rate.
回避方法: Use bank ATMs for cash withdrawals or exchange at banks. Always check the displayed rate and all commissions before handing over money.
3. Unexpected service charge
手口: Some restaurants, especially in tourist zones, add a service charge of 10 to 15 percent to the bill without stating it clearly on the menu. Some also bring items like bread or water unrequested and charge for them.
回避方法: Ask if service is included before ordering. Check the full itemised bill and politely refuse items you did not order.
4. Selling used tickets
手口: Scammers at Metro stations offer to sell you their 'remaining' ticket at a discount, but the ticket is already validated or expired, leaving you liable for a fine during inspection.
回避方法: Buy tickets only from official ticket machines, the Budapest GO app, or official sales points. Never buy from individuals.
5. The shell game
手口: Street hustlers run a cup-and-ball or shell game on tables in busy pedestrian areas. Passersby who join always lose money, and an accomplice may pretend to win to attract bets.
回避方法: Ignore these games entirely and keep walking. They are illegal and rigged.
6. Dynamic currency conversion
手口: ATMs and card terminals offer to charge you in your home currency instead of HUF at a poor exchange rate, often adding 4 to 10 percent to the cost.
回避方法: Always select HUF and decline the conversion offer. The same rule applies to card payments in shops and restaurants.

Always choose to be charged in HUF and decline dynamic currency conversion. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Independent ATM machines in tourist areas often carry high withdrawal fees. Check the fee warning before confirming the transaction.
