1. Museum of Islamic Art

見どころ: 当時91歳だった建築家I.M.ペイは、イスラム世界を数ヶ月かけて旅し、カイロの9世紀に建てられたイブン・トゥールーン・モスクにあるシンプルで幾何学的な純粋さにインスピレーションを見出した。博物館の石は一日を通して色を変え、日の出の温かな蜂蜜色から、砂漠の真昼の太陽の下での冷たい銀灰色へと移り変わる。

2. Souq Waqif

Doha

クイックファクト: 500以上のショップが曲がりくねった路地にひしめき合い、商人たちは乳香やサフランから伝統的な短剣や手織りの絨毯まであらゆるものを売り込んでいる。スークの鷹病院では毎月100羽以上の猛禽類を治療し、カタールの古代からの鷹狩りの伝統を垣間見ることができる。

見どころ: 午後8時ちょうど、スパイス商人たちがローズウォーターを石畳に撒き、花の香りで空気を冷ますと、路地は香りの劇場に変わる。ファルコン・スークでは、12,000カタールリヤルのシロハヤブサを腕に乗せ、ベドウィンの商人が7代前まで遡るその血統を説明してくれる。

3. Katara Cultural Village

クイックファクト: 5,000席の円形劇場は、ギリシャ・ローマ様式と複雑なイスラム幾何学模様を融合させている。21以上のギャラリーとアートセンターがこの広大な海辺の複合施設内にあり、年間200万人以上の来場者を集めている。

4. Aspire Park

Doha

クイックファクト: 88ヘクタールの緑地に広がり、ジョギングコース、遊び場、日陰のあるピクニック用の芝生が全域に整備されている。中央には10,000平方メートルの人造湖があり、カメやアヒルが生息し、週末には家族連れで賑わう。

見どころ: 金曜の朝、公園は多文化のピクニックシーンに変わり、数十ものフィリピン系、インド系、アラブ系の家族連れが大きなバンヤンの木の下に場所を確保する。隣接する高さ300メートルのタワーは東端にそびえ、そのLEDファサードは色を変えて点滅し、日没後は湖面に映り込む。

5. Al Zubarah Fort

Al Zubarah

One of the best-preserved fortresses on the Gulf transports you to the era of pearl divers and desert traders. You wander through cool corridors, climb the defensive towers, and feel the wind that filled the sails of the dhows centuries ago.

クイックファクト: The fortress originally served as a police station and coast guard before being converted into a museum. Its thick limestone walls provide a pleasantly cool interior even on the hottest Gulf days.

見どころ: From the battlements of the fortress, you have a breathtaking 360-degree view of the former pearl-diving town of Al Zubarah, whose ruins have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013. If you look closely, you can still make out the outlines of over 60 mosques and hundreds of houses lying hidden beneath the desert sand.

6. The Corniche

Doha

The seven-kilometer-long waterfront promenade offers the best view of the Doha skyline. Here, Arabic tradition and modernity meet right on the water.

クイックファクト: The Corniche stretches for seven kilometers along Doha Bay. More than 20,000 trees and palms line the waterfront promenade, which is used daily by thousands of joggers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

見どころ: At high tide, it seems as if Doha's skyline grows directly out of the water, especially spectacular at sunset when the glass facades of the skyscrapers light up in gold and orange. Less well known is the night dhow fleet, whose wooden sailing boats have been anchored here for centuries, creating a magical contrast with the modern towers.

7. National Museum of Qatar

8. Doha Fire Station

Doha

Here artists paint, print, and discuss right before your eyes. Stroll through open studios, galleries, and a relaxed café in a converted fire station.

クイックファクト: Once a fire station, the yellow building now houses one of the most dynamic art residencies in the Middle East. The house attracts around 150,000 visitors annually, who explore contemporary works and studios free of charge.

見どころ: In the former sleeping quarters of the firefighters, up to 15 artists from around the world now work in modern studios whose glass walls completely reveal the creative process to visitors. As you walk through the corridors, you occasionally smell fresh paint and hear the hum of printing presses right next to works from the permanent collection comprising 9,000 pieces.
