Colossae Ancient City

概要

クイックファクト: 羊毛の生産により、この都市は古代に計り知れない富を築いた。地元の羊は深い紫黒色の毛で珍重されていた。7世紀に大規模な地震が都市を壊滅させ、その遺跡は10メートルの沖積シルトの下に埋もれた。

見どころ: 華やかな隣町ヒエラポリスやラオディケアとは異なり、この遺跡はほぼ完全に未発掘のままであり、ローマ都市全体が農民の畑の下に眠っている。草に覆われた丘を歩けば、足元に通りや建物の輪郭を文字通り感じ取ることができる。考古学者の手が1300年以上も及んでいないのだ。
