概要
クイックファクト: 200以上の洞窟教会と修道院が、谷全体にわたって柔らかな火山凝灰岩に直接彫り込まれている。暗闇教会内部の10世紀のフレスコ画は、部屋に光を取り入れる窓がほとんどなかったため、これほど鮮やかに生き残った。
見どころ: カランルク・キリセ、すなわち暗闇教会の内部では、キリストの生涯を描いた青みがかったフレスコ画が、描かれたその日のように新鮮に見える。何世紀にもわたるほぼ完全な暗黒のおかげである。同時に入場できるのは30人だけなので、修道士たちが900年以上前に描いた場面を静かで親密な雰囲気で鑑賞できる。
