Korte feiten: Elk jaar tussen juni en december migreren meer dan 2.000 zuidelijke rechtwalvissen naar de kalme baaien rond dit schiereiland om te paren en te kalven. De kust herbergt ook de enige plek op aarde waar orka's zichzelf opzettelijk op het strand werpen om zeeleeuwpuppies te vangen.
Hoogtepunten: Bij Punta Norte heeft een kleine familie orka's een jachttechniek ontwikkeld die nergens anders voorkomt: ze werpen hun drie ton zware lichamen doelbewust op het kiezelstrand om zeeleeuwpuppies te grijpen en wurmen zich dan terug het water in voordat de volgende golf komt. Een zes meter lange orka over natte stenen zien glijden met zijn kaken om een spartelende prooi geklemd is het soort rauwe natuurmoment dat voor altijd in je geheugen brandt.
Insidertips
- Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens, as many animals stay just far enough from the viewpoints that phone cameras won't capture the detail.
- Visit Punta Norte at low tide when orcas hunt closest to shore and sea lions haul out on the exposed rocks.
- Skip the midday heat from 1 PM to 4 PM when penguins retreat to their burrows and most animals nap.
- Pack a full tank of gas and snacks in Puerto Pirámides, as there are no fuel stations or restaurants inside the 360,000-hectare reserve.
