Korte feiten: Deze 19e-eeuwse waterweg strekt zich uit over 101 kilometer door Polen en Wit-Rusland en verbindt de rivieren de Wisła en de Neman via 18 sluizen en 22 spuisluizen. Ingenieurs ontwierpen het kanaal met zulke precisie dat de oorspronkelijke sluismechanismen, handbediend met houten balken, nog steeds functioneren na bijna 200 jaar.
Hoogtepunten: Anders dan de meeste kanalen snijdt deze waterweg door een UNESCO-biosfeerreservaat waar bevers, otters en zeearenden het water patrouilleren langs passerende boten. De sluizen veranderen van hoogte met maximaal 3 meter per stuk, en je kunt de originele handbediende mechanismen kraakpand tot leven zien komen terwijl water door eeuwenoude eikenhouten poorten stroomt.

- Rent a bike in Hrodna and cycle the 12 km section from Nyomnava to Augustow for the most scenic lock sequence.
- Pack binoculars: the canal corridor is prime birdwatching territory, especially near the forested sections between locks.
- Visit on weekday mornings to have entire lock sections to yourself without crowds.
- Wear sturdy shoes and bug spray: the towpaths can get muddy after rain, and mosquitoes swarm near the water at dusk.
