Korte feiten: Gevestigd in een opvallend 19e-eeuws gebouw dat ooit een meisjeslyceum was, herbergt het museum meer dan 100.000 artefacten die 8.000 jaar geschiedenis beslaan. Een van zijn kostbaarste bezittingen is de Panagyurishte-goudschat, een set van negen kunstig vervaardigde Thracische gouden vaten die samen meer dan 6 kilo wegen.
Hoogtepunten: De binnenplaats van het museum verbergt een kleine, originele 4e-eeuwse mozaïekvloer uit het oude Philippopolis, die nog steeds ligt op de plek waar hij onder het gebouw werd gevonden. Je kunt op een glazen platform direct boven het mozaïek staan en kijken hoe het zonlicht verschuift over duizenden kleine gekleurde steentjes waar al meer dan 1.600 jaar overheen is gelopen.

- Skip the main floor first and head straight to the top floor where the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure is displayed, before crowds form.
- Don't miss the small coin collection room on the second floor featuring over 3,000 ancient coins, including some minted right in Philippopolis.
- Photography is allowed without flash, but the gold treasure room has dimmer lighting to protect the artifacts, so adjust your camera settings beforehand.
- Combine your visit with a walk through the adjacent Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, just a 5-minute stroll uphill.
