Korte feiten: Dit uit boomstammen opgetrokken gebedshuis, een van de 16 houten kerken van Chiloé die op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst staan, bootst met zijn gevel de kathedraal van Santiago na. Het hele bouwwerk is met houten pennen verbonden zonder ook maar één spijker, en de met dakspanen beklede muren zijn geschilderd in fel geel met paarse accenten.
Hoogtepunten: Massieve houten steunberen aan de buitenzijde houden de hoge toren aan meerdere kanten overeind, alsof een vogel met zijn vleugels op de grond steunt. Wie met zijn vingers de muren aanraakt, voelt de ruwheid van dakspanen die door de eeuwen heen zijn gladgestreken, en binnen hangt de geur van hars en geschiedenis.
Insidertips
- Wear sturdy shoes, as you will have to climb a couple of hundred steps up the hill.
- The best photo spot is the square in front of the facade, and at sunset the eastern side turns orange.
- Do not take photos during mass and quietly examine the vault after the service, the wood pattern there resembles the bottom of an overturned boat.
- Plan your visit before closing, as the latest services leave tourists little time to explore the interior.
