Entry costs around 3,000 Chilean pesos for foreigners, about 30 kronor, and is paid in cash at the small gatehouse. Skip the expensive guided tour and drive yourself instead; with an early start you'll get ahead of most visitors and avoid the crowds.

Korte feiten: Het water houdt bijna tien keer het zoutgehalte van de zee, en toch wemelt het van het leven op de ondiepe bodemvlakken. Hier op 2.300 meter hoogte, midden in 's werelds op twee na grootste zoutveld, verzamelen zich tot wel 40.000 flamingo's van drie soorten wanneer het seizoen op zijn best is.
Hoogtepunten: Eén enkele roze kudde eet zichzelf roze: de kleur van de flamingo's komt van de kleine garnaaltjes Artemia salina die krioelen in de pekel, en hoe meer prooien, hoe feller het verenkleed. Wandel de korst op wanneer de wind gaat liggen en hoor hoe elke stap knerst als gebroken glas terwijl spiegelgladde lagunes de bergen verdubbelen.
Insidertips
- Put on your sunglasses already at the entrance, the salt reflections are blinding between ten and four.
- Aim for weekdays before eight o'clock, then you'll have almost the whole place to yourself.
- Walk to the far end of the boardwalk and sit still for ten minutes, then the flamingos will dare to come close.
- Bring a windbreaker, cold gusts blow in from the Andes even in the middle of summer.
