Korte feiten: De rotsformaties bestaan uit zout en klei die wind en water in miljoenen jaren hebben uitgeslepen, en de luchtvochtigheid wordt hier soms onder de vijf procent gemeten. De zout- en kleilaag strekt zich als een lange ruggengraat door de woestijn, terwijl de duinen aan de rand van het dal sandboarders uit heel Zuid-Amerika trekken.
Hoogtepunten: Op de bodem van het dal knisperen de zoutkristallen onder je voeten als droge sneeuw, terwijl de middagzon de kleiformaties laat gloeien in roze, oranje en dieprood. Wanneer de hitte stijgt, kan de hetteflikkering een luchtspiegeling creëren die de hele dalbodem laat glinsteren als een wateroppervlak, ook al is regen hier de meeste jaren een zeldzaamheid.

- Bring plenty of water and sun protection, shade is almost completely absent and the midday sun is merciless.
- The best photo is taken from the viewpoint at the edge in the late afternoon light, where you get both the sand dune and the entire valley floor in the picture.
- Sandboard rental is available at the entrance, but find the softest side of the dune and wax the board properly for the best glide.
- Skip the middle of the day when the heat and crowds are at their worst, and come instead around 4-5 PM for a calmer atmosphere.
