Korte feiten: Meer dan 1.500 dieren van meer dan 100 soorten noemen deze plek hun thuis, waaronder een zeldzame witte neushoornfamilie die jaar na jaar succesvol nakomelingen krijgt. Het meeslepende Oceanium van de dierentuin laat bezoekers onder water lopen door een tunnel omringd door haaien, roggen en zeeschildpadden.
Hoogtepunten: De dierentuin biedt een zeldzame "Giraffe Breakfast" achter de schermen, waarbij je oog in oog staat met torenhoge giraffes terwijl ze blaadjes knabbelen op slechts centimeters van je gezicht. Het zien van een vijf meter hoge giraffe die zijn blauwzwarte tong uitsteekt om een tak te grijpen die je vasthoudt, is een intieme ontmoeting die je niet snel vergeet.
Insidertips
- Arrive by 10 AM and head straight to the Oceanium first, when the tunnel is nearly empty and you'll have sharks swimming right over you alone.
- The daily sea lion feeding at 1:30 PM draws big crowds, so stake out a spot by the underwater viewing window 15 minutes early.
- Pack a picnic lunch instead of eating at the on-site cafés, as there are plenty of shaded tables near the children's petting zoo area.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a rain jacket even in summer, as the zoo is spread across 20+ acres with mostly outdoor paths.
