Korte feiten: Ongeveer 2,3 miljoen kalksteenblokken van gemiddeld 2,5 ton elk vormen de Grote Piramide, een structuur die bijna 3.900 jaar lang de hoogste op aarde bleef. De piramide van Chefren heeft nog steeds een stuk van zijn oorspronkelijke witte bekleding nabij de top, een glimp van de schitterende afwerking die ooit over alle drie de monumenten gloeide.
Hoogtepunten: Landmeters staan er nog steeds versteld van dat de drie piramides binnen een fractie van een graad op het ware noorden zijn uitgelijnd, een precisie die wedijvert met moderne meetapparatuur. - Wear grippy closed shoes and carry at least a liter of water, since paving stones are uneven and shade is nearly nonexistent.
- For the classic shot with all three pyramids in a row, walk or drive to the panoramic viewpoint on the desert road west of the site.
- Skip the interior climb unless you are fit and comfortable in steep, narrow, sweltering passages that take about 30 minutes round trip.
