Korte feiten: Slechts een handvol vrouwen regeerde ooit over het oude Nijlk koninkrijk als volwaardige farao, en deze koningin regeerde 22 triomfantelijke jaren. Haar monument stapelt drie zuilengalerijen tegen een klif van bijna 300 meter hoog die boven de woestijnvloer uittorent.
Hoogtepunten: Haar hoofdboekhouder Senenmut kerfde in het geheim een klein portret van zichzelf in een zuil binnen een deuropening, zodat hij eeuwig over zijn koningin kon waken. Vervaagde sporen van blauwe en rode verf op de reliëfs suggereren dat het hele complex ooit schitterde in felle kleuren.
Insidertips
- Queue before the gates open and walk straight to the top terrace before tour groups arrive.
- A broad-brimmed hat and two full water bottles are non-negotiable, the ramps offer zero shade by late morning.
- Stand at the second terrace railing on the south end for the classic symmetric facade shot with the cliff behind.
- Ask a site guard to point out the concealed likeness, it is tiny and easy to walk right past.
