Korte feiten: Het museum herbergt een van de meest waardevolle collecties moderne westerse kunst buiten Europa en Noord-Amerika, met werken van Picasso, Warhol en Pollock. Het grootste deel van de collectie blijft in opslag en wordt zelden aan het publiek getoond, waardoor elke tentoonstelling een bijzonder evenement is.
Hoogtepunten: Diep in de kluizen van het museum ligt een Jackson Pollock-druipschilderij ter waarde van tientallen miljoenen, samen met een Van Gogh-zelfportret dat bijna nooit daglicht ziet. De legendarische curator die deze collectie in de jaren 70 samenstelde, kreeg van de vrouw van de sjah, Farah Pahlavi, een blanco cheque en besteedde slechts 18 maanden aan het opkopen van meesterwerken voordat de revolutie alles bevroor.
