Wat bij dingen om te doen in Kenia als eerste in je opkomt, is het Maasai Mara Nationaal Reservaat, dat elk jaar van juli tot en met oktober het decor vormt van de migratie van bijna 1,5 miljoen wilde dieren. De ondiepe lagune, die 350 dagen per jaar kalm blijft, stelt elke zwemmer gerust, van beginner tot professional. Bij zonsopgang is het strand voor jou alleen en wandel je op blote voeten over de rifpaden die het terugtrekkende water heeft blootgelegd.
Korte feiten: Het getij, dat tot 4 meter kan verschillen, verandert het 17 kilometer lange strand twee keer per dag in een heel ander toneel. Het terugtrekkende water onthult koraalriffen die u te voet kunt bereiken en toont tropische vissen die tot aan uw enkels komen.
Hoogtepunten: In het bos direct achter het strand leven meer dan 400 zwart-witte colobusapen; bij zonsopgang kunt u de families die over de top van de bomen trekken van dichtbij gadeslaan. Groene zeeschildpadden die grazen in de ondiepe wateren van het koraalrif zijn vanaf 20 meter uit de kust zo duidelijk zichtbaar dat u de vlekken op hun schilden kunt tellen.
