Korte feiten: Vanille van de plantages aan de oostkust, die hier in de kraampjes wordt aangeboden, dekt ongeveer 80 procent van de wereldwijde natuurlijke productie. Ongeveer 300 handelaren verkopen hier kruiden, groenten, raffiaweefsels en houtsnijwerk, en elke prijs is tot de helft af te dingen.
Hoogtepunten: In de zijpassage vindt elke ochtend een vanilleveiling plaats, waar de prijs per gram binnen één minuut stijgt en de winnaar ter plaatse contant betaalt. Zakjes vanille worden op een grote metalen weegschaal gelegd en de lucht ruikt zo sterk naar zoete vanille dat je hoofd ervan begint te tollen.
