Korte feiten: At the top of the peninsula stands an old British military gate and a 19th century fortress that was closed to the public for decades. Today this area covers 42 hectares of modern development with luxury apartments, restaurants and a walkway right along the sea.
Hoogtepunten: Beneath the ground hides the remains of a British barracks that was converted into an underground parking garage, so you walk on the roof of historic walls without knowing what is under your feet. When the sun sets, the guard at Fort Tigné's rampart still pays tribute by lowering the flag, a tradition that has continued without interruption since 1792.
Insidertips
- Bring sneakers, the paths around the fortress are rocky and uneven, and the seaside promenade is not suitable for all types of footwear.
- The best photo of Valletta is taken from the farthest point of the peninsula, where the entire harbor horizon is visible.
- Skip midday, when the sun is directly overhead and the shadows disappear from the fortress walls.
- At the restaurants on the cape, prices are 20 to 30 percent higher than in Sliema, so have a coffee before or after the walk in the city.
