Korte feiten: Negen eeuwen Atlantische wind hebben dit bolwerk op de heuvelhelling gevormd, waarvan de monumentale hoefijzerpoort uit 1195 de straatjes in zacht blauw en wit bewaakt. Muntthee dampt in een café op de klif boven de riviermonding, terwijl zwerfkatten de betegelde binnenplaatsen beneden patrouilleren.
Hoogtepunten: Een defensieve truc schuilt in het ontwerp van de oude poort: de hoofdstraat buigt scherp zodat aanvallers nooit het einde konden zien, maar vandaag biedt die bocht beschutting aan een rij blauwgekalkte huizen waar een heel leven aan wasgoed in de zon droogt. Voorbij het laatste huis loopt de klif af naar een duizelingwekkend uitzicht, waar surfers, veerboten en vissersboten allemaal dezelfde strook Atlantische Oceaan doen kolken.
