Korte feiten: Deze middeleeuwse vestingwerken strekken zich uit over meer dan 1,2 kilometer en omringden ooit de hele oude binnenstad in een beschermende stenen omarming. Bijna 80 procent van de oorspronkelijke muren is nog intact, wat ze tot een van de best bewaarde stadsmurenstelsels in Slowakije maakt.
Hoogtepunten: In tegenstelling tot de meeste middeleeuwse muren die werden afgebroken voor stadsontwikkeling, hebben deze het overleefd omdat de lokale bevolking delen ombouwde tot de achterwanden van hun huizen en tuinen. Loop langs het smalle pad ernaast en je kunt nog originele schietgaten zien en een 16e-eeuws renaissancistisch bastion met muren van meer dan twee meter dik.

- Start at the Mihal Tower, the only preserved gate tower, then walk counterclockwise for the best views of the bastion.
- Bring comfortable walking shoes: the path alongside the walls is a mix of paved sidewalks and uneven gravel sections.
- Visit in late afternoon when the light hits the stone facades and the crowds from the morning tours have dispersed.
- Combine your walk with a stop at the nearby Skalica town square, just a two-minute walk from the walls.
