Korte feiten: Deze massieve granieten ontsluiting, die 200 meter boven het omringende oerwoud uitsteekt, maakte ooit deel uit van dezelfde rotsformatie als Sigiriya voordat eeuwen van erosie ze uit elkaar dreef. Monniken woonden meer dan 2000 jaar in grotten op deze heuvel, en een boeddhistisch klooster uit de 3e eeuw voor Christus heeft nog steeds zichtbare inscripties en meditatieplatforms die in de steen zijn uitgehouwen.
Hoogtepunten: Op de top heb je een uitzicht op Sigiriya dat eigenlijk beter is dan op Sigiriya zelf staan: het hele oude fort ligt een kilometer verderop als een perfect miniatuur. De lokale bevolking zegt dat de zonsopgang hier het hele landschap verandert in tinten gesmolten goud en diep violet, met mist die tussen de twee rotsen samenkomt als een meer van wolken.

- Wear grippy closed-toe shoes, the final stretch is a near-vertical scramble over jagged boulders and loose gravel.
- The huge reclining Buddha at the base is modern, keep climbing past it to find the ancient cave monastery with original 1,500-year-old inscriptions.
- Bring a small flashlight or use your phone torch for the dark cave section near the top, it's pitch black and uneven inside.
- Skip the last 30 minutes before sunset, the descent in twilight is genuinely dangerous on the rocky sections.
