Korte feiten: More than 30 rock-cut churches and chapels cluster within this monastic complex carved into soft volcanic tuff. Several chapels retain vivid 11th-century Byzantine frescoes, with the Dark Church preserving its paintings through centuries of near-total darkness.
Hoogtepunten: The Dark Church earned its name because it has almost no windows, and that perpetual gloom is exactly why its 11th-century biblical frescoes survived in such pristine condition. A single shaft of natural light hits the dome painting of Christ Pantocrator at just the right angle, making the golden halos seem to glow against the deep blue background.
Insidertips
- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
