Korte feiten: Hier rusten verschillende grootmeesters van de Timuriden, waaronder de grote veroveraar Timur Lenk, wiens sarcofaag van donkergroen jade meer dan 300 kilo weegt. De turquoise koepel, die 37 meter boven het graf uittorent, is versierd met meer dan 60.000 blauwgouden tegels die glinsteren in de zon.
Hoogtepunten: De legende zegt dat als iemand Timurs graf opent, er een catastrofale oorlog losbreekt, en dat gebeurde inderdaad toen Sovjetwetenschappers de crypte openden op 21 juni 1941, slechts één dag voor de Duitse invasie van de Sovjetunie. In de schaduw van de roltrap vonden ze een inscriptie die waarschuwde: "Wie mijn graf opent, zal een indringer loslaten die erger is dan ik", en velen geloven dat Operatie Barbarossa de vervulling van die profetie was.
