Korte feiten: Een reusachtige sextant van 40 meter, gedeeltelijk ondergronds begraven, stelde Ulugh Beg in staat in de jaren 1420 sterposities met verbazingwekkende nauwkeurigheid te meten. Zijn sterrencatalogus van 1.018 sterren bleef meer dan 200 jaar lang de meest precieze ter wereld en werd gebruikt door astronomen van Istanbul tot India.
Hoogtepunten: Het belangrijkste instrument van het observatorium was een kolossale meridiaanboog uitgehouwen in een geul in de heuvel, bekleed met marmer en voorzien van nauwkeurige markeringen. Astronomen klommen in deze stenen tunnel om hemellichamen te volgen, met niets anders dan hun ogen en de stille geometrie van de boog boven hen.
