Melhor época para visitar
Visit at 5pm when the golden light warms the coral stone and the shadows stretch dramatically across the plaza. Mornings before 8am offer near-empty frames for photography, but the real atmosphere peaks during late afternoon light.

Sobre
Fatos rápidos: More than 2 million people pass through this coral stone gateway each year, connecting the lively Getsemaní neighborhood with the colonial Old City. The clock mechanism at the top was imported from Switzerland in the early 20th century and still keeps time by hand winding twice a week.
Destaques: Look closely at the archway's base and you will spot a small statue of the Virgin Mary tucked into a niche, placed there centuries ago to bless everyone who entered the city. On the plaza side, the faded colonial frescoes on the adjacent buildings shift color as the afternoon sun moves across the carved stone facade.
Dicas de quem conhece
- Position yourself on the Getsemaní side facing the Old City for the cleanest photo composition without crowds blocking the frame.
- Come back after 10pm when the archway is lit from below and the plaza empties out for dramatic nighttime shots.
- The fruit vendors selling mango slices and coconut water from carts in Plaza de los Coches are the best deal in the area at just a few thousand pesos.
- Skip midday visits when the sun is directly overhead and harsh shadows wash out the stone details.
