Fatos rápidos: Com seus 5.800 hectares de superfície, é um dos maiores reservatórios artificiais da antiguidade. O rei Parakramabahu o mandou construir no século XII, proclamando que "nenhuma gota d'água recebida da chuva deve ir para o mar sem ser útil ao homem".
Destaques: O muro de contenção se estende por mais de 14 quilômetros, uma obra que ainda hoje regula o fluxo hídrico para arrozais e vilarejos. Ao entardecer, o reflexo do céu incendiado nas águas calmas se funde com as silhuetas das antigas ruínas que se espelham na superfície.
