Fatos rápidos: Mais de 30 igrejas e capelas escavadas na rocha se agrupam neste complexo monástico talhado em tufo vulcânico macio. Várias capelas preservam vívidos afrescos bizantinos do século XI, e a Igreja Escura manteve suas pinturas através de séculos de escuridão quase total.
Destaques: A Igreja Escura ganhou esse nome porque não tem quase nenhuma janela, e essa escuridão perpétua é exatamente a razão pela qual seus afrescos bíblicos do século XI sobreviveram em tão perfeito estado. Um único feixe de luz natural atinge a pintura da cúpula do Cristo Pantocrator no ângulo certo, fazendo as auréolas douradas parecerem brilhar contra o fundo azul profundo.

- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
