Thailand is generally welcoming and safe for tourists, but petty scams around transport, tickets and gem shops are common in main tourist areas. The biggest watch is overpaying for taxis/tuk-tuks and falling for gem or jet-ski rental schemes. Keep valuables secured, especially late at night around busy stations.

1. Meter refused or flat fare
Как это работает: Unlicensed drivers or tuk-tuk operators outside the terminal offer a high flat price and refuse to turn on the meter, sometimes claiming the meter is broken or that traffic makes it impossible.
Как этого избежать: Walk to the official metered taxi rank, insist the meter runs, and agree the route before leaving. Refuse any flat price that is far above the metered norm.
2. Gem and jewelry scam
Как это работает: A friendly local says a famous gem shop is closing or offers a government deal, then a tuk-tuk takes you there where overpriced stones are sold with a promise to resell at profit.
Как этого избежать: Ignore gem shop recommendations from strangers and tuk-tuk drivers. Buy nothing from shops reached this way; official tourist police advise against such deals.
3. Jet ski rental damage claim
Как это работает: After renting a jet ski, the vendor claims pre-existing damage and demands large payment or holds your passport until you pay.
Как этого избежать: Rent only from reputable shops, photograph the jet ski before use, and never hand over your passport as a deposit.
4. Grand Palace closed trick
Как это работает: A tuk-tuk or passerby says a sight is closed for a holiday or a special event and offers to take you to a cheaper alternative, often a gem or tailor shop.
Как этого избежать: Check official opening times yourself. Ignore anyone claiming a closed site and refuse unsolicited offers to reroute your day.
5. Poor rate exchange booths
Как это работает: Tourist-area exchange booths and money changers quote poor rates or add hidden commissions, sometimes with confusing buy-sell tables.
Как этого избежать: Compare rates and prefer bank-linked exchange counters. Decline dynamic currency conversion when paying by card abroad.
6. Pigeon or trick game scams
Как это работает: Street hustlers offer bird seed, bracelets or games of chance, then demand payment once you engage, sometimes with a group pressuring you to pay.
Как этого избежать: Politely decline any offered item or game and keep walking without touching it. Do not engage with groups that pressure for payment.
