2. Menu without prices near the square
Kako deluje: Some restaurants in the old town and along the waterfront present menus without prices or add unexpected service and cover charges at the end of the meal, especially in peak season.
Kako se izogniti: Only sit down where prices are clearly displayed on the menu. Ask for a printed menu with prices before ordering.
3. Poor-rate exchange booths
Kako deluje: Exchange booths aimed at tourists quote rates well below the official mid-market rate and add hidden commissions. Croatia uses the euro, so most visitors do not need to exchange at all.
Kako se izogniti: Pay by card in euros and withdraw only small amounts from bank ATMs. Skip exchange booths near the old town entirely.
4. High-fee independent ATMs
Kako deluje: Independent, non-bank ATMs in tourist areas charge high withdrawal fees and offer dynamic currency conversion in your home currency at a poor rate, which is only revealed on screen.
Kako se izogniti: Use ATMs attached to banks and always select to be charged in euros. Confirm the fee before the transaction completes.
