Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom)
Najboljši čas za obisk
Go at opening to avoid tour groups and enjoy calm interior light, or late afternoon for warm sunlight on the tiled roof and excellent skyline photos.
Nasveti za proračun
Expect a small tourist entry fee, roughly 1,500–2,500 HUF as of 2024, while worshippers attend free during services; buy the combined church plus tower/museum ticket to save, and check the Budapest Card for occasional discounts.

O znamenitosti
Hitre informacije: Sunlight sets the multicolored Zsolnay roof tiles aglow, and inside the high, vaulted nave an organ's notes linger like whispers through ornate frescoes. Visitors often pause at the intricately carved pulpit and wonder how royal coronations and centuries of ceremonies have shaped the building's layered, dramatic atmosphere.
Poudarki: Look up at the roof: thousands of glossy Zsolnay eosin-glazed tiles catch the sun in greens, reds and golds so they sparkle like dragon scales when you tilt your head. Between 1541 and 1686 the interior was used as a mosque, which led to medieval frescoes being plastered over and later uncovered as faint, ghostly fragments beside the brighter 19th-century paintings.
Notranji nasveti
- Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, services are still held and dress is respected.
- Shoot the colorful roof and panorama from Fisherman’s Bastion across the square, early morning gives the cleanest light.
- Avoid the midday tour rush by arriving at opening or after 16:00, most guided groups cluster around noon.
- No flash photography inside; skip the tower if short on time since it requires an extra ticket and stairs are narrow.
