Ilha do Farol

Najboljši čas za obisk

Early morning or late afternoon between May and September for calm waters, softer light, and fewer boatloads of day-trippers. Visit during a spring low tide to walk the sandbar to Armona.

Nasveti za proračun

The ferry from Olhão costs around 4-5 euros round-trip; no entry fee for the island itself. Bring your own food, water, and sun protection since the island has no shops or restaurants once you leave the dock area.

O znamenitosti

Hitre informacije: Ringed by sandbars stretching 10 kilometers, this island shifts shape with every winter storm and tidal surge. Only 50 or so residents live here year-round, sharing the island with egrets, oystercatchers, and the ruins of an 18th-century fort.

Poudarki: At low tide, a sand bridge emerges connecting the island to neighboring Armona, allowing you to walk across the seabed between two islands for about two hours. The walk reveals tidal pools shimmering with tiny crabs, sea stars, and the occasional octopus hiding among the rocks.

Notranji nasveti

  • Walk past the first crowded beach near the dock and follow the boardwalk 15 minutes east for emptier sand and better shelling.
  • Pack a picnic and a sun shelter in a dry bag, the wind whips sand across the dunes and umbrellas rarely stay put.
  • Time your visit around a spring low tide (check tables in Olhão) to cross the sandy umbilical cord to Ilha da Armona.
  • Leave no trace, the fragile dune ecosystem takes years to recover from footprints and scattered trash.
