Hitre informacije: Three massive Buddha statues carved directly into a granite cliff face stand guard over the ancient city. Over 1.5 million visitors walk these palace grounds yearly, discovering relics from a kingdom that dominated South Asia for centuries.
Poudarki: The Gal Vihara rock temple features four Buddha images carved from a single granite face, including a 14-meter reclining Buddha with a surprisingly serene expression that seems to shift as sunlight moves across the stone. At the Royal Palace complex, you can still see the 30-meter long audience hall supported by carved stone columns, where 12th century kings once hosted visiting dignitaries from as far as China.
