Ringing cowbells and pine-scented air accompany hikes where lucky walkers spot Balkan chamois and ancient beech groves, and more than 20 ski runs plus hundreds of kilometers of trails keep visitors busy year-round.
Höjdpunkter: A 2,290-meter summit rises above ancient glacial stone rivers where granite boulders, some the size of cars, pile into corridors more than two kilometers long and flash in the morning light like scattered coins. Locals still head out at dusk for torchlit walks and impromptu sled runs, the pine-resin scent and distant cowbells turning the slopes into a crackling, low-lit theater.

- Wear layered, windproof clothing above 1,700 m, temperatures and wind change rapidly.
- Bring sturdy hiking boots with good grip for rocky and sometimes muddy trails.
- Start hikes before 9am on weekends to avoid queues at Aleko and the chairlift.
- Head to Kamen Del or the ridge near Cherni Vrah for the best city-and-mountain photos; avoid the busiest Aleko picnic area if you want solitude.
