Snabba fakta: Three-quarters of the palace was rebuilt after a fire in 1884, though the original fire started in a bakery and destroyed priceless artworks. Today it houses all three branches of Danish government: the parliament, the prime minister's office, and the Supreme Court.
Höjdpunkter: Underneath the modern parliamentary chambers lie the ruins of Bishop Absalon's 12th-century castle, discovered during excavation work in the early 1900s. You can walk through the original stone walls, see medieval toilet facilities, and stand in the same spot where Copenhagen was born over 800 years ago.

- The tower elevator only goes halfway; you'll need to climb the remaining 56 meters on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Visit the palace kitchens on the ground floor to see a 1,000-piece copper cookware collection used for royal banquets.
- Arrive right at opening time to get the tower queue done first, as the free access draws long lines by midday.
- The Great Hall's 17 tapestries were a gift from a Danish businessman for the Queen's 50th birthday and depict 1,000 years of Danish history.
