Snabba fakta: Franciskanerklostret i Füssen gömmer en av Tysklands äldsta fresker, som härstammar från 1200-talet. Klosterkyrkan Sankt Stefan är den enda bevarade romanska kyrkan i staden och dess klocktorn erbjuder en imponerande utsikt över Füssens panorama.

Höjdpunkter: Under kyrkgolvet döljer sig en sällsynt fresk av Kristus från år 1280, som upptäcktes helt av en slump under en renovering år 1956. De ursprungliga medeltida färgerna är så levande att de ser ut att ha målats för bara några år sedan.

• At the entrance, notice the small door to the left of the main altar. It leads to the cloister with medieval frescoes that many visitors overlook.
• The best photo is from the monastery courtyard with a view of the Gothic bell tower in the background, especially in the afternoon when the sun illuminates the stone details.
• Bring a flashlight with you. The lighting in the side chapels is dim and the frescoes stand out better with direct light.
• Combine your visit with a walk to the Lech River, which is only a 3-minute walk away and offers a beautiful view of the church from a distance.
