1. White Tower of Thessaloniki

Arch of Galerius

2. Arch of Galerius

Snabba fakta: In reality, the Arch of Galerius was part of a vast ceremonial complex that included the palace and the throne room. The reliefs on its surface depict the emperor's military campaigns with cinematic detail, including elephants and exotic animals he brought from the East.

Höjdpunkter: Few know that the Arch was never a simple gateway: scholars believe it was part of an astronomical observatory, as its layout aligned with the sunrise at the summer solstice. Imagine standing beneath its massive dome while the morning sun rays pass exactly through the arches, just as they did 1,700 years ago.

3. Aristotelous Square

4.7 (50,330)
Historisk platsTuristattraktionIntressant platsEtablering

4. Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

Snabba fakta: It houses more than 300,000 exhibits covering 2,000 years of Macedonian history. Among them is the famous Gold Wreath of Vergina, an impressive golden wreath weighing 714 grams.

Höjdpunkter: The most impressive exhibit is the Gold Wreath of Vergina, a finely crafted wreath made of pure gold found in the tomb of Philip II. Visitors are left speechless before the gold olive leaves that seem to sway as if real, despite the 2,300 years that have passed.

5. Byzantine Walls of Thessaloniki

Snabba fakta: The Ladadika district got its name from the olive presses and oil shops that dominated the area in the 19th century. Today, this neighborhood of more than 40 restored buildings is the most vibrant gastronomic and nightlife corner of the city.

Höjdpunkter: Few people know that Ladadika survived the 1917 fire that destroyed the city center, thanks to its network of narrow cobblestone streets that acted as a natural barrier. Walking among the brick buildings, you will feel the atmosphere of old Thessaloniki come alive through the smell of grilled meat and the music pouring out from every corner.

Thessaloniki is way more chill than Athens but still has great food. The waterfront area at sunset is gorgeous. 3 days felt about right for us.

Loved the food scene here. Bougatsa for breakfast changed my life. Only complaint was the stray dogs everywhere, made me nervous walking at night.

Skip the fancy restaurants along Nikis Avenue. Walk into the side streets near Athonos Square for souvlaki at half the price and double the flavor. Locals eat there.

Honestly found it a bit meh compared to other Greek cities. The city beach is not great and the traffic is chaotic. Would skip if you have limited time in Greece.
