Om

Snabba fakta: Pilgrims have walked this route for over 1,500 years, retracing the steps of Jesus from his condemnation to his crucifixion. The path stretches roughly 600 meters through the Old City's winding streets, marked by 14 Stations of the Cross that are commemorated with small brass discs set into the stone pavement.

Höjdpunkter: Most visitors don't realize the first two stations are inside a Muslim school courtyard, requiring you to ask permission from the guards to enter. On Friday afternoons at 3pm, Franciscan monks lead a procession through the streets with real Roman-era flagstones, bells echoing off the stone walls as dozens of international pilgrims join in carrying a wooden cross.

Insidertips

  • Start at the Lions Gate and walk south. The route flows roughly northwest to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  • Look for the small brass discs with Roman numerals embedded in the ground. Some are easy to miss among the market stalls.
  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. The stone pavement is uneven and can be slippery, especially after rain.
  • Station 5 has a clear handprint indentation in the stone wall where tradition says Jesus braced himself.
